How to Tell When It’s Time to Remove a Tree – Signs Napa Homeowners Shouldn’t Ignore

August 6, 2025

Trees are a big part of what makes Napa Valley beautiful. They offer shade, privacy, and value to your property. But sometimes, a tree outgrows its space, becomes a hazard, or starts to decline—and that’s when it may be time to remove it.

At Mike’s Tree Service, we don’t remove trees unless it’s truly necessary. Below are the clear signs that it’s time to say goodbye—and how to do it safely.

1. The Tree Is Too Close to Your House or Buildings

If a tree’s branches are touching your roof or the trunk is within 10 feet of your home, it could be putting your structure at risk. Roots can crack foundations and driveways, and branches can cause roof damage or become a fire hazard..

2. There’s Visible Rot or Decay

Soft, spongy wood, large cavities, or mushrooms growing at the base can all be signs of internal decay. A rotting tree may look stable but can fall unexpectedly, especially during storms.

3. It Leans More Than It Used To

Some trees naturally lean, but if a tree suddenly starts tipping or the ground around the roots looks raised or cracked, it could be a sign of instability. This is especially important on sloped or hillside properties in Napa Valley.

4. Infestations or Disease

In our area, issues like bark beetles, powdery mildew, or sudden oak death are common. If a tree is diseased or heavily infested, it can threaten the health of nearby trees and should be evaluated quickly.

5. It Poses a Fire Risk

Overgrown or dying trees near homes, barns, or other structures are a major fire hazard. Clearing these out before fire season helps protect your home and improve defensible space.

Community Awareness Is Key

Sudden Oak Death affects the entire Napa Valley ecosystem. Protecting our oaks requires community effort and awareness. We encourage residents, vineyard managers, and HOAs to stay informed, report any suspicious tree symptoms, and work together to slow the spread.

6. It’s Causing Damage Below Ground

Tree roots can be just as destructive as branches. If you notice cracked walkways, heaving soil, blocked drainage, or even plumbing issues, the root system may be to blame.

What Happens After You Decide to Remove It?

We’ll assess the situation and let you know if removal is necessary. If it is, we’ll handle:

  • Safe and clean removal
  • Stump grinding, if needed
  • Hauling off debris or converting it into usable mulch

You may have noticed a once-healthy oak turning brown seemingly overnight — a troubling sign that many Napa Valley residents are seeing more often these days. This sudden decline is often caused by a dangerous disease known as Sudden Oak Death (SOD) , which threatens our region’s iconic oak trees. In Napa County, thousands of oaks have been lost to this disease in recent years, changing landscapes, impacting local ecosystems, and putting valuable properties at risk. Whether you’re a homeowner, estate manager, vineyard owner, or HOA decision-maker, understanding Sudden Oak Death is essential for protecting your trees and preserving Napa’s natural beauty.

Living in Napa Valley wine country means enjoying stunning views, world-class vineyards, and peaceful rural living. But it also means facing a growing wildfire risk . With hotter summers, drier winters, and increasing vegetation density, creating a fire-safe landscape is more than good practice — it’s an absolute necessity. While many homeowners focus on clearing brush or maintaining lawns, one of the most critical — and most overlooked — aspects of wildfire prevention is proper tree care .
